The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum was awarded funding by the New York Energy Research and Development Authority and the City of New York to build a cogeneration plant. The plant was a win-win for the museum. The museum will be saving hundreds and thousands of dollars in energy cost and the facility will serve as a fascinating, site specific exhibit space to educate visitors about the cogeneration process.
The 400-kilowatt plant will provide enough backup power to make the Intrepid Museum an important resource for first responders in the event of a disaster. Plans to locate the plant aboard the ship instead of on the pier greatly diminished the threat of flooding, and will restore the views of the river obscured by the old plant.
Collado Engineering provided the HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection design for the cogen plant, mechanical rooms and related ancillary equipment. The cogen plant is located on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th decks which have limited headroom. The air conditioning, ventilation, lighting, fire alarm, drainage and sprinkler support systems for the cogeneration system were integrated into the available space. The ships construction of 3” to 4” thick plate steel created challenges on the routing of the services.
